چکیده

An ocean general circulation model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean is used to study the vertically integrated vorticity equation for the annual mean flow in the Atlantic North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC). It is found that the nonlinear terms play an important role in the vorticity budget, in the western part of the basin. Sverdrup balance does not hold in the region of the North Brazil Current retroflection, where advection of relative vorticity by the mean flow and by the eddies is important. In the eastern part of the basin, these nonlinearities are negligible and the flow appears to be in Sverdrup balance. In the model, the cut-off location occurs at 32 W: The results suggest that in the western part of the basin, observations relying on hydrographic data neglect two important contributions to the vorticity balance: advection of planetary vorticity by the deep meridional flow and advection of relative vorticity. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Geostrophic Circulation in the Tropical North Pacific Ocean Based on Argo Profiles

Absolute geostrophic currents in the North Pacific Ocean are calculated from the newly gridded Argo profiling float data using the P-vector method for the period of 2004–11. The zonal geostrophic currents based on the Argo profile data are found to be stronger than those based on the traditionalWorld Ocean Atlas 2009 (WOA09) data. A westward mean geostrophic flow underneath the North Equatorial...

Investigation of the North Brazil Current retroflection and North Equatorial Countercurrent variability

[1] Eight years of TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter-derived sea height anomaly and climatological hydrographic data are used to investigate the temporal and spatial variability of the North Brazil Current (NBC) retroflection and the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC). The NBC retroflection exhibits a mean position of 6.6 N± 2.0 , with a strong annual signal and year-to-year variability. The annual ...

The influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran

The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...

A curious local surface salinity maximum in the northwestern tropical Atlantic

[1] Sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements from the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite reveal the seasonal development of a local salinity maximum in the northwestern tropical Atlantic in boreal winter to early spring. This seasonal tropical SSS maximum, which is confirmed by comparison to in situ observations, is centered at 8 N, and is up to 0.5 psu saltier than the surrounding water despite its locat...
